Dr. David Fish, director of Interventional Cardiology Research and Education, presented each Interventional
Cardiology fellow with a replica of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. The Buddha is holding a catheter and, as Dr. Fish noted, the hands are in the correct position.
Dr. Fish chose the symbol of Buddha as a psychological ideal in training Interventional Cardiology Fellows.
Maitreya signifies the operational ideals of awareness, inner peace, living, and paying attention to the
present moment, compassion, and personal sacrifice to others. In addition, the position of the body and
hands acts as a reminder to the Fellows that the proper focus of one's mind and physical energy into the
acts of the hands depends on a posture that reflects balance of the body, heart, and mind.
